Wikimedia Commons

The Wikimedia Commons is a repository of images, sound, and other multimedia files. As of November 2008, the repository contained over 3.5 million media files.

If you explore the Wikimedia Commons, you will find that some of the major categories include: Science, Society, Nature, Video, Sound, and Images. An especially good resource is the Quality Images archive—narrow your search by browsing quality images by subject matter.  There is alose a more extensive list of categories for images and pictures.

Remember, although the policy of Wikimedia Commons is that all of the materials in the COmmons are to be released under a free license, you should still double check the license and comply with its terms of use. You can read more about the Wikimedia license policy on the "Reusing content outside of Wikimedia" page.

Open Library

The Open Library aims to be a web site that contains "one web page for every book ever published." Currently the site has over 22 million books catelogued with over 1 million books scanned. Authors may wish to pull materials from books in the public domain to incorporate into their works. For instance, a search of scanned mathematics books brings up over 1,000 results of mathematics books in the public domain.

Recently, the Open Library began a new "scan on demand" program in which you can request that a book in the public domain be scanned by a participating library. There is no charge for the service and books are delivered to you electronically within 3 to 5 business days after requestion them. If you wish to learn more about the Open Library, consider taking a guided tour of the web site.
